Christmas is fast approaching and many people find this time of year tough. Financial and family pressures can reach another level. You might be feeling stressed, overwhelmed and certainly not in the mood for celebrating! (Trust me you won't the only one!)
For some Christmas can stir up feelings of grief and loss, missing those who are no longer with us. For the socially anxious; Christmas parties and family gatherings might feel daunting; worrying about making small talk, overthinking conversations...
The festive period can isolate feelings of loneliness, especially for those who are estranged from family or have lost loved ones.
In a highly commercialised society, driven by social media Christmas portrayed as a time of happiness, joy, and togetherness. When people feel disconnected or unhappy, they might experience guilt or shame for not being able to live up to these ideals.
My tips to help you through this period:
- Set Realistic Expectations: Accept that the holidays might not be perfect, and it's okay to lower expectations.
- Take Care of Yourself: Prioritize self-care, including rest, eating well, and getting outside when possible. Even a walk around the block can help.
- Reach Out for Support: Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or a therapist if you're feeling down. Talking to someone can provide relief. (see below for points of contact)
- Create New Traditions: If old traditions feel painful, consider creating new ones that reflect your current needs and desires.
- Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practice mindfulness, deep breathing, or meditation to help manage stress and stay grounded.
- Limit Social Media: Avoid the pressure of comparing your holiday experience to others' perfect-looking posts.
- Plan for Breaks: If you're spending a lot of time with family, schedule moments for yourself to recharge (again even if it's a walk around the block!)
